The infected: Hunted
Nobody knows why some people pop infected, even the term infected is wrong, harking back to the first recognised cases back in the 60s when it was thought to be caused by a virus, none trace of a virus has ever been discovered though. Theories that it could be a genetic condition have been dismissed; although it is common for it to run in families, it doesn't always, and cases where adopted children have developed near identical traits as their adoptive parents further confounded those scientists that believed it was genetic in origin.... In short, fifty years after the first infected appeared and we know jack shit about the cause.
I know you don't need to be told what an infected is, hell hardly a day goes by that reports of a dangerous infected on killing spree, doesn't make the news, never mind the fact France is pretty much run by them these days, but please humor me, I'm in a story telling mood.
An infected is, well when a person pops infected they change, develop powers, sounds cool huh, who doesn't love super powers right? Yeah, well even though abilities like enhanced strength and speed are fairly common among infected, so are abilities that aren't extremely useful. I once knew a guy who's ability was to make plants grow a tiny bit faster, that's it. Anyway, being infected isn't as cool as it sounds, it comes with a major drawback, your first mode, what's a first mode you may ask, well let me try and explain it.
Imagine somebody reached inside your head and picked an aspect of your personality; an emotion, a drive, even an interest, and cranked that aspect up to eleven and broke the off switch you would experience that aspect Twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year, for the rest of your life, not even getting a break for Christmas. Oh you can feel other things, but that aspect is always there, not in the background, but smack bang in the front, it's your primary mental state, your first mode. The lucky ones have relatively easy modes to deal with, but the thing even a relatively positive first mode can be dangerous.... Say for example that your first mode was something that most would think of as silly, harmless, say for example it was a need to collect tiny ceramic elephants, don't laugh just yet, now imagine that need being there in your mind constantly, you even dream about it, it consumes you to the point you would steal to get one, and one isn't enough, always needing more..... And what if somebody got in the way of your need to have them, if you had lost yourself to your first mode you would kill without a second thought to get one more little elephant.... Now imagine you had the powers that make you virtually unstoppable to any normal human.... Not so funny now huh?
Ramped up to those levels, even love as a first mode can be a dangerous thing.....
Now you see why people are so scared of the infected, even the harmless majority.
Normal people aren't the only ones scared, a lot of infected do their best to hide what they are, living with the fear of persecution by normals, not to mention the government....
While being infected isn't illegal, although plenty of bigots would love to change that, everyone has heard stories of people popping infected only for the IPB to show up, and killing them or simply making them disappear.
Hm? The IPB? The Infected Protection Bureau, they are the government's answer to "The Infected Problem" a mixture of federal agents and government sanctioned infected.
The out of control infected you see on the news, well the IPB are the ones they send to "neutralise" the problem.
I guess I should tell you who I am, I'm Chris, I'm infected, I'm being hunted and I'm not the only one...
Infected are being killed, nothing new there? Sad but true, however this isn't the usual case of infected haters or the IPB, the infected of this city are being taken, their bodies found, days, weeks later ripped to pieces, and it seems we are next.....

Naturally the biased media reports it as being perpetrated by infected, despite no evidence other than the vicious nature of the killings. One day you begin noticing an unfamiliar black car with tinted windows everywhere you go.
